Savour Ontario Eats – Spotlight on Bay of Quinte & Area

Alongside the north shore of Lake Ontario lies the Bay of Quinte - home to a diverse community, celebrating both urban and rural living.

As the radial point between Toronto and Ottawa, two of Ontario’s most bustling cities, the BoQ offers a quaint retreat for your favourite summer activities. Whether it be drinks on a patio, a post hike picnic or a meal along the shore, the restaurateurs of the area have you covered. Indulging in the bounty of the rich agriculture, the farm-to-table dining scene is plentiful, from fresh produce to local meats, to artisan cheeses. The makers of the region bear the duty of supporting their community with pride - in return, we long to celebrate their commitment by bringing attention to their craft and the story behind it.

Farmers Daughter Logo

Farmers Daughter Sub Shoppe / Quinte West

Owner and operator Melissa Strecker leads the Farmers Daughter Sub Shoppe with the same values as she learnt on the farm - to be hardworking, honest, dedicated, and reliable. After a hard day's work growing up on a Turkey farm in rural Niagara alongside her father, the two always managed to work up an appetite. This inspired a love for fresh, hearty foods that are made with their same local mindset. With each signature sub paying homage to her childhood on the farm, they’re topped with local produce, meats, and Empire Cheese. Try their specialty sub, 1820, a tribute to her favourite tractor - topped with AAA wood-fired beef and caramelized onion cheese.

Beginning as a small-town dairy cooperative - not unlike their confrères at Empire - specializing in some of the finest aged cheddars, Ivanhoe privatized after over a century in the industry in order to redirect their vision and expand their palates. With a newfound focus on artisan specialty cheese, the company returned to their roots in re-joining a dairy co-op in 2008, where they continue today to produce some of Ontario’s favourite cheeses.
